Tourist Information About Coimbra

Coimbra served as the nation’s capital during the High Middle Ages, and it is better-known for its university, the University of Coimbra. Its foundation dates from 1111, but it previously had Arab, Roman and Celtic occupations.

Coimbra is a city of students and that can be perceived throughout the year, in the many pubs, restaurants and “Repúblicas” (student residences).

Downtown (Baixa) in the shopping area you should visit the historic Café Santa Cruz, where you can enjoy a “Crúzio”, one of the many regional pastries Coimbra has to offer. Then you can visit the Monastery of Santa Cruz, which houses the tomb of the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques.

Half up the hill to the University (Alta), you can find the Old Cathedral. On its steps the Monumental Serenade takes place in which students dressed in black capes sing the Coimbra Fado. If you are curious about Coimbra Fado  please hear the Balada da Despedida (Farewell Ballad), by Grupo de Fado “Mensagem” (Serenata 2016) or hear the Monumental Serenade of 2019 before COVID-19.

Coimbra holds many more interesting places to visit besides the Old University (Alta) campus. We recommend the Machado de Castro National Museum which contains the Roman Cryptoporticus from the 1st century. It is very well preserved because it was filled with earth to support the new Bishop’s Palace built on top of it. It holds an impressive collection of art. It is definitely worth a visit!
